Art, Artifice and Perturbance

I

CRAFT, ART, ARTIFICE AND PERTURBANCE By. Antonio Correa Iglesias

I

When Damien Hirst emphasizes the need to generate defamiliarization in art, he puts the spotlight on at least two fundamental elements. On the one hand, the "relational" character of the art works in the evolution and symbolic elaboration of an artist, and the nature of the "spectator". In this case, a subject that has established itself, at least in the last thirty years as a subject of self-affirmation, banishing the negativity of itself, and of the other, to lessen itself in the "panacea" of positivity, that is, in the absence of an opposite. Now, when Damien Hirst proposes to place in the same space his series of abstract paintings Visual Candy and The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, defamiliarization is at the center of the artist's conception, as well as an understanding of the complexity of the processes related to contemporary art. But above all, Damien Hirst emphasizes the character of a craft that can neither be established nor "underpinned" by the need for disruption. I have very often insisted on the contradictory character of perturbance in certain contemporary art; that is to say, a production that only intends to generate shock and stupor, but that in none of the cases correlates these "spirited" states with a reflection on the artistic process. The perturbance associated with a certain "symbolic" production in contemporary art works from the sensory and the emotive, without us questioning where these "affections" come from. This inability to question is related to the "annulment" of the negativity of the self and the other. If uncertainty makes us be or at least "seem to be" animal rationale once it inmerses us in defamiliarization, perturbance increasingly introduces us to a state absent of visual and conceptual narrativity. At least some contemporary art does not pretend to question nor put in doubt a symbolic elaboration, much less try to correlate it to a historical narrative; in any case, it functions as an assertion, as an object of devotion, "manufacture" or simply as a brand. As they have been established in levity, what is relevant is not the communication but the performativity associated to it, its capacity for media capitalization and, of course, the rendition of the "artist" in the market. The prestidigitator, who above all things can also be the "contemporary artist", rejuvenates the old trick of the pig in a poke or, in the Cuban case, to give cat for hare.

II

Now, having said that, it is necessary to distinguish in the contemporary production of art who starts from the craft, who from the artifice and who simply from perturbance. These distinctions imply not only the capacity for defamiliarization but also a critical perspective on the evolution and symbolic elaboration of a visual creator.

To attempt today to define what art is after Marcel Duchamp, under the heteronym R. Mutt, presented "The Fountain" in 1917, would be an action of epistemological naiveté. These are not times for definitions, at least not in the argumentative sense in which Nietzsche and Lezama educated us. However, this declaration of principles, this absence of base, this illusion of freedom, but above all, this absence of finality is a gap that, instrumentalized in the field of production, but above all from criticsm, makes any piece of work pass off as art. Given the impossibility of defining what art is and the real possibility that anything can be art, today more than ever a visual artist must necessarily be an intellectual with a solid visual and conceptual background. Thus, an inquiry into the ontological nature of the image must consciously be at the center of any contemporary visual production.

What does this mean? How is the image encoded in an inescapable system of references? That is, how an image relates to all other images. This character must be one of the articulating elements of intellection in a visual creator. Translated into a common language, it is the capacity of visual synthesis that a creator generates. Bergson and Deleuze would say that there are things and there are perceptions of things, these are prehensions. An approach to the nature of these processes is only possible when a visual creator generates a critical capacity capable of dialoguing with a historical narrative, with themselves and with the other. When the visual creator is "clear" about this complex 1 Note the usage of finality and not teleology. epistemological dilemma, the craft does everything else. All of the above is just that, a criterion of discernment, a principle on which to establish symbolic production, criticism and the collection of art.

III

The shift from a physical medium to a digital universe has led to the de-factification of the human existence, generating a culture of the post-factual, a culture of the sensory and the emotive that challanges the nature of the mankind in its relationship with time. This virtualization of life, articulated by artificial intelligence [AI], creates an impermanence, an absence of what Bergson would call duration.

As everything is ephemeral, there is no memory associated with the experience, this means that our cognitive and emotional existence is unstable. These contingencies which are subject to normativity, are associated to the absence of the creation of a real value that is expressed in the displacement towards virtuality, but a virtualization of an experience that is above all, expressed in the absence of narrativity. The subject of self-management is established as an emotive consumer, where impulse is the vehicle, not the experience. The exercise of contemplation is replaced by multitasking and by bites news. Reading and writing are "displaced" as thinking exercises. This "annulment" pretends to unseat the Kantian maxim. In short, Kant is still right in saying that reading and writing devices are the basis of coming of age.

IV

Art is no stranger to these processes and I suspect that the 2 DELEUZE, Guilles. The image-motion. Film studies1. Barcelona: Paidos,1948, p.116. BERGSON, Henri. Matter and Memorie.Mexico. Aguilar. 1963 pp. 377-378. "displacement" of the museum, of the gallery and the institutionalism that this represents or represented, to the gallery on Instagram, or simply the awful substitution of the Work as original by the three-dimensional modeling or mapping emphasizes the lack of devotion and the incapacity of contemplation of a subject absent of real interaction with the work of art itself.

Beyond the correlate associated to the work of art, what has become "relevant" is not the work itself, but the digitalization of the experience of it on the network. This apparent and inclusive displacement invalidates the nature of the work of art as an object, legitimizing the virtualization of the experience, an experience in which the actual work is absent. What lies at the heart of these processes is the dismantling of the residual modern subject. The contemporary "subject", once it loses its identity in relations with others, reproduces them with itself, entering into a web of domination that is no longer physical, but digital. The apparent identity acquired in the virtuality of the network as a new "reality" leads to the establishment of a new understanding of the multitude, as a mass, as a human conglomerate. In this way, the notion of freedom that is claimed to be defended, is defended from the new submission to the group, and to the network, is defended from the absence of an identity. In this way, freedom ceases to be a notion and becomes an illusion. In other words, the fear that freedom provoked, and that was so well explained by Erick From, is replaced by a sensation, by an emotivity, that it is correlated to the network, where everything is ephemeral and illusory.

Now, the displacement of the museum to the gallery in Instagram is nothing but the annulment of the factual experience of the work, the canceleation of the experience of this in front of the original by an algorithmic instrumentalization. That is to say, the denaturalization of the work of art, replaces Benjamin's reproducibility with the virtualization of the experience of it. The purpuse of the work, in its denaturalization ceases to be to become the background or wallpaper of an experience of self- affirmation, absent of ontology and memory.

Not only can anything be considered a "work of art" , now you can consume it as a virtuality. Yet, the dematerialization of existence cannot be understood as an absolute process, but as a gradual process that is considerably affecting the world of art, but, above all, human existence.

Today, more than ever, an exercise of intellectual reduction is necessary and indispensable, an exercise of reduction where the essential is expressed in conceptual or visual actions, where a totality is installed to displace as much media performativity, as much sandunga, as much sabrosura disguised as content. If we are consistent with the fact that one of the contemporary signs is irony, we will be able to see the state of things with a bit more clarity. The displacements from craft to artifice and from these to perturbance as an aftermath, have liberated the beast, have liberated the Jabberwocky.

If the dissolution of the limits of art substantially changes the ways in which it is made, even replaces to a great extent its conceptual sites; criticism and collecting must play today more than ever a fundamental role in this process of radical rupture. If the modern idea of art, as well as modern art, bring with them the problem of image, as well as the crisis of the aesthetics of identity of art, what does it mean to be contemporary in art? Answering this question is only possible from theoretical approach, in order to generate an overwhelming visuality from there. The question could also be, will we know how to face this challenge?

V

One of the things that has impressed me the most in Patricio Rodriguez's work is the sense of profession. The profession through which an action is executed with the final purpose of a work, a thought. Heidegger in "Being and Time" but above all in "The Origin of the Work of Art" emphasized manual labor. Thought, he said, is a manual labor that is executed through means of writing. The fullness of being is precisely in the capacity to transmit through a craft, a purpose, a meaning that translates into what he calls reliability. Severo Sarduy also said that he wrote with the totality of his body, devoured by an image, states that became a pulse that descended to the hand. Patricio Rodriguez also works with his hands, and I suspect that he also works with the totality of the body. It cannot be otherwise, else how can one explain his states of deep contemplation or, in any case, the schizoid passages that consume and posses him repeatedly? To penetrate is to pierce, to delve into the depths possessed by an insatiable desire. In front of the seduction of the ephemeral, of the imperishable, Patricio places intelligence, creativity, a sense of the chirurgical. His work captures for itself the randomnes and concurrence with the only objective of breaking -by other means- linear causality and fictitious teleologisms.

Patricio Rodriguez is a meticulous artist linked to a deep sense of contemplation. Obsessed by confluences, his work searches for a lost unity, from which thought and language once departed. But unity per se is irrelevant if it does not procure a foundational identity expressed as alterity. The symbolic recomposition that Patricio Rodriguez achieves regarding the human figure results in an argumentation that defies the disciplinary patterns of understanding.

Rejecting any preconceived "argumentation", any moral or political conviction, Patricio creates a man transacted by a recurring ubiquity. The human figure is at the center of his visual inquiry. But not in an iconoclastic sense. In any case, man appears dismembered, in permanent transition, debating with death, with the fact of ceasing to be, always subjected, of course, to an uncertainty that controls the possible scenarios of being.

Patricio Rodriguez's work is a constant juxtaposition, a search that explores the paths of a garden that branches. Patricio brakes free from Euclidean linearity, from the framework of a formal logic, and opens the door to a rhizomatic universe, where everything is unpredictable. It could be said that his work is not such, but rather the confluences of an ephemeral morphology. Whatever it is, ceases to be in its recomposition. Patricio works from the premonitions of uncertainty. His "templates", his paper-cut miniatures are the gears and the language that have made him an artist possessed by meticulous details. Patricio challenges chance again and again, and challenges it in the way it converges in a visuality as assembler.

The visual dynamics that generates a work that is made and unmade without the slightest remorse, speaks of the shrewdness of an artist who has found his own language, an identity that creates above all things a web of relationships.

VI

"Chance and concurrence. Visuality as assembler" is a book that gathers the symbolic production of Patricio Rodriguez in the last twenty years. More than a book, it is a logbook where his fabulations, from the most real to the most abstract, are treasured but above all, where they are discussed. Twenty years is not a short time in the symbolic production of a visual creator; Gardel lied when he said that twenty years is nothing. At the same time, "El Azar y la Concurrencia" has not been organized as a chronology. Chronologies are fictitious, like anthologies, they are never complete. That is why we have decided that visualities will be the organizing criterion for all his work. These confluences will articulate a production, a series, but, above all, a discourse that will gradually account for an evolutionary criterion around a symbology. "El Azar y la Concurrencia" also takes place between eleven seasons, eleven ways of proceeding, eleven variations where Patricio Rodriguez's technique is perfected, becomes more and more abstract, but also more and more luminous. It is, if you will, a transition from the bland linearity to the explosion of the rhizomatic.

With its own outstanding identity, each of the eleven passages can be read autonomously, they do not need one another to gain authority and value. Each one of them deals with aspects that are co-related with the human condition. But human above all in its fragility, in the weakness of an existence that is physical, but also metaphysical. Patricio Rodriguez knows,- as very few do,- how to convey this fragility through his work, and he does so by recognizing the brevity of an existence in the wefts of its relationships. Man is the end and the beginning of all things, from the one who looks, to the one who participates surreptitiously in the construction of the gaze. "Chance and concurrence. Visuality as assembler" is an author's book, but it is also a book where Patricio Rodriguez persistently mocks the unreality of the mediums in art. His work, but above all his visuality cannot be attached to a medium, in a traditional way. And it cannot be otherwise, Patricio transitions from the bi-dimensionality of a medium such as paper, to a three- dimensional explosion. Everything is escape, reanimation, paroxysm. To such an extent that a support such as paper is annulled, it disappears before this bold game of infinite combinations. There is something sculptural in what Patricio does that refuses to be named. So much so that we have dedicated in the body of the book some passages that show intimate details that are, themselves works of art, since they could be consumed as such and in perfect autonomy. "Chance and concurrence. Visuality as assembler" is above all a fiction, a visual story, a framework that reveals not a purpose, but the shrewdness of whoever decides to enter this labyrinth. To access it is also to access the existence of multiple timelines, multiple densities, but above all it is to make sense of a destiny absent of teleology.

Like Ts'ui Pên, Patricio Rodríguez has also written this book as a story, a visual story that is also a labyrinth. Hopefully the reader will see in it a parable that runs in a time that escapes the atrocious mechanism of clocks and that enters into an infinite ramification called life.
